I'm using Ansible running inside a minimal Alpine Linux VM. The installation is almost as simple as documented on the ansible website, but a few extra packages need to be installed first.

This document was tested with Alpine Linux v3.3.3 x64

Install extra packages

$ sudo apk add gcc git libffi-dev musl-dev openssl-dev perl py-pip python python-dev sshpass

Optional: update pip

You may wish to update pip to be sure it is the latest version, with:

$ sudo pip install --upgrade pip

Test

Ansible should return SUCCESS:

$ ansible all -i localhost, -m ping --ask-pass --ssh-common-args="-o UserKnownHostsFile=/dev/null -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no"
SSH password:
localhost | SUCCESS => {
    "changed": false,
    "ping": "pong"
}

NOTE1: The "," at the end of "localhost," is essential - this is what makes the inventory a list instead of a filename.

NOTE2: The ssh-common-args may not be necessary, if you have already SSH'd to localhost and accepted the host key. Chances are that you haven't done that, though. You wouldn't disable host key checking in normal use (when SSHing to a real host).

Package Explanations

The above list of packages came about through trial and error - try installing things, decipher the error, install new requisites, and try again. There might be some redundancy. My original installation trials involved manually cloning the ansible git repo and building, rather than getting pip to do it, so maybe there will be relevant differences there.

These are the packages I installed, and the errors I encountered which prompted me to install them:

perl

/usr/libexec/git-core/git-submodule: line 1: /usr/bin/perl: not found

bash

NOTE: Bash was only required when following the alternate installation method (git cloning the repository) documented on the ansible website - I have not installed it as part of the setup shown above. The env-setup script does not work under the default AlpineLinux busybox shell.

$ source ./hacking/env-setup
-ash: ./hacking/env-setup: line 21: syntax error: bad substitution

gcc

Collecting cffi>=1.4.1 (from cryptography>=1.1->paramiko)
